The subtle, sly and often wry humor in Diane Barnes’ MIXED SIGNALS is a delight. Mind you, Barnes’ humor is not the laugh-out-loud slapstick of a Janet Evanovich book. Rather it is a more astute, intelligence life-in-all-its-ups-and-down, ironic sort of humor. 4/5. Mixed Signals is a cute start to the series. Julie is a believable character who’s just recently suffered a breakup and her best friend, Liz, is trying to get her back in the game. Nico is a friend of a friend who seems to be perfect for Julie but she’s resistant to let him in/5. Mixed Signals, which is Higgs first fiction novel, is an endearing book full of romance, heartbreak, humor, and suspense. As I read this book, I felt like I lived in Abingdon, Virginia, next door to Norah and Belle, and experienced all their ups and downs of their relationships with each other and the guys in their lives!/5.
